this is interesting, and would be a good primer for beginners, except for their insistence on using a D50 white point for monitor calibration in the US-- the perception of D50 light from reflective surfaces and transmissive ones is not equal, and in most cases using D50 as your main monitor calibration will cause far more problems than it solves.

If you work in a situation in which you have a viewing booth placed directly next to (or in sight of) your workstation, the best thing you can do is calibrate the white point of your monitor for a visual match to a plain white sheet of (proofing) paper. Even under D50 light the visual match will often be something closer to 6000k, even using a paper with few OBAs.

Just a word of warning-- but in general D65 should be considered the standard for monitor calibration due to the natural color of the CCFL backlight and the difference in perception between reflective and transmissive surfaces-- and remember, all said and done, its more important for an image to look "good" than "right" (as long as it remains looking good all the way to the press)

Check out http://www.color-image.com/ for some very in depth analysis of such techniques (site seems to be down right now... but assuming it comes back to life)
