Adobe Illustrator is the default application for 2D packaging design, ArtPro is specialised software for colour separation and applying trapping between colours. Colour separation and trapping can be done Adobe Illustrator of you know what you are doing.

he was asking for the BEST application.

illustrator is definetely not the best!

you may upgrade illustrator with some 3rd party plugins to enhance the functionality
but artpro is still the best in automatic trapping, transparancies and spot colors.
last but not least illustrator is very limited in file import. artpro can import every postscript and pdf file and convert the contents to editable objects.

I wouldn't disagree however the price tag for ArtPro puts it out of reach for anybody but printers and the bigger repro outfits. The poster didn't really indicate if he/she is interested in an application for originating packaging artwork or processing it for print, you wouldn't originate artwork in ArtPro.

of course artpro is not for the creative part of the job.
but you can do your design in whatever application you like.

some of our customers do their layout in photoshop or ms publisher.

all these design applications are not packaging specific.
